Updating failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.

  • Hello. When in the modern WordPress editor, if I try switch from Public to password protected I get and error upon pressing Update. Error: “Updating failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.“

    After deactivating all plugins I was still getting the error. I got it to go away by deactivating the Astra theme and using a WP core theme. After reactivating Astra the error continues if you want to edit the password protection but at least I can momentarily deactivate the theme to make the update to it. More or less I think I am reporting a bug. If not please let me know if there is something I can do to fix this.

    A similar issue just occurred on a different site and host with Astra free 4.4.0. Again if I switch to another theme I can publish changes to a post. Otherwise it reads “Publishing failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.” Then if I switch back to Astra and try to edit the post I get “Updating failed. The response is not a valid JSON response.”

    Ok… so I rolled back from 4.4.0 to 4.3.1 and I could update no problem.

    During our investigation we found that the users who experience this issue have their sites hosted on Dreamhost. Could you guys please if your sites are also hosted there? Just in case this is a specific-hosting issue.

    Hi guys,

    Yes, we also got a confirmation from other users on our Support Portal. This is a false positive from DreamHost firewall. Please get in touch with their support to get this fixed.
