When the WebP Express plugin is enabled, I get a notification at the top of the page and post edit screens that “Updating failed” when I attempt to update a change. When I look at the live page, the changes appear to be saved. I deactivated all other plugins and still saw this message when editing/updating pages and posts. When I deactivate WebP Express, the error message is not displayed. The WebP files appear to be served up correctly when the plugin is enabled. Environment:

    WPEngine hosting
    WebP Express Version 0.13.0
    WordPress 5.1.1

    Thanks for reporting.
Are you using alter html feature of WebP Express? If so, does it help disabling alter html?

The HTML option isn’t enabled in the plugin settings. I tried using the WebP Express plugin on another WordPress site that’s had fewer plugins installed in the past. It allows me to update pages without the error. Not sure how to determine why it’s working on one and not the other. Maybe there are changes made by another plugin that affect WebP Express functions – even if all other plugins are disabled. I’m newer to WordPress, so still learning how to troubleshoot it. Here’s a partial list of plugins that had been enabled in the past on the site which might have affected WebP:

    Imsanity
    Redirection
    Smush
    WP Retina 2x

Maybe another clue. If I create a new post with just text, I can update it multiple times without any issues. However, if I try to insert an image it fails to update. While messing around with inserting images, I discovered something. If I add an image block and use the upload image option, I get an error “The response is not a valid JSON response”. When I disable WebP Express, I don’t get that error and can upload the image fine and update the post without errors.

Thank you for the extra details. I have created an issue for it.

This very nasty bug is fixed in 0.13.1, which I just released.
