• I really want to update to wordpress 3.2.1 from 3.0.3
I’m hoping its faster, that would be cool

if something breaks, can I revert back to 3.0.3
for sure? I’m not a gambler with web sites, is it 100 percent safe?

  • Best solution is to make a full backup of the site as it is now, including a full database backup. If anything goes wrong you can just revert to that.

well. yeah, thanks, very true, of course, but can I revert after an update back to 3.0.3 with that history function, as I would if I botched up a content item somehow? Its a primary advantage that I thought wordpress had over other CMS was the ability to update easily and trouble free and the ability to revert to previous installs easily withOUT having to do that massive backup thing. I do have backups of the db emailed to us every month, and I do backup the files, but I’d rather just click a button to revert, than have to rebuild the entire cms if the update goes awry.

If you need to revert then you need to re-upload the wp-includes and wp-admin directories of version 3.0.3. The database should still work fine but it is still wise to have a backed up copy from before the upgrade.

Are you using a very customised theme that relies on certain plugins? and do you mind listing what plugins you use? They are the main causes of problems with upgrades.

In the end if you did need to do a full recovery it is not as much a daunting task as it sounds. In fact it can take just minutes depending on the size of your site and hosting configuration.
