• I am shifting to self-hosting from free wordpress.com and need some help.

During my test run I am able to shift everything successfully on Hostgator servers but there is just one problem.

How do I change the image links that still point to my wordpress blog here? I used the ‘search and replace’ plugin and I can make the changes for links etc. but the images still point to old wordpress! I did this search and replace in all fields (please see if I made some error):

    search: “https://oldblog.wordpress.com/files/”
    replace: “https://www.newblog.com/wp-content/uploads/”

    Thanks a lot.

My blog is https://vikas-gupta.in ( a custom url for https://vikasgupta.wordpress.com) that I am shifting to Hostgator servers. Thanks.

wordpress.com forums are so active unlike here! ??

When you imported the WordPress WXR file you had exported from WordPress.com, did you tick the box to include media files? If not, clear out your test db and try reimporting the file and check the box to get the media files.

esmi, I had checked that option. Now I have shifted and the images load from my wordpress.com blog except for my latest post.

All images have been imported. It is just that if you check the properties of the images, you will find that they are still hosted at the old wordpress blog.

When you exported, I think you have to actually edit that file to point to the new location. That’s a guess, I’ve always been self hosted.

Anyway, you need to run a search and replace on your database to change the URLs. If you don’t know how to do that, try something like this plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/search-and-replace/

You want to search for the old base URLs and replace with the one you want.

    Ipstenu,

I am using that plugin and I wrote in the original post here.

The images are loading from old wordpress account. I have not a search and replace for images on this blog but only done in a test blog and it does not work!

    Thanks for the help.

I listed the plugin since there are many search and replace and I wanted to be sure you used the one I thought of ??

If that doesn’t do it you need to go in via phpMyAdmin…

    Lorelle has a good walkthrough

    Ipstenu,

Thanks for the Lorelle link (it is a 2005 post but I think it is not outdated). Will read it and update the developments here.

Search and replace in SQL hasn’t changed in a very long time ?? And likely won’t ever change the basic functionality. My book from the 90s is still good!

    Ipstenu,

    Thanks.

I will take time in learning things. I was unable to work with the database area due to low tech knowledge.

I submitted a ticket to wordpress.com suggesting the bug in wordpress import-export. They found out the bug, thanked me and now I just tested the export-import again within wordpress.com and the images are now loaded from the new blog files (and not the old one). So the bug is fixed. But I cannot reimport again because I have made many changes on my blog now.

Will learn database changing soon or seek some WP expert friend who can do it for me. Thanks again.
