• I was wondering if anyone could list the steps they would use to successfully update a live website.
Firstly my current website is old and the premium wootheme needs updating. I’ve designed a new theme and had it coded into the new premium wootheme that I’ve purchased for my site.
However I have never installed a new theme which is drastically different from the current one before.

Currently my developer has the new theme running on his test server.
I have installed the wp-database-backup plugin. Taken a backup of the developers version and installed in on my mac using MAMP.
As I still need to make some content tweaks before I overwrite the current live site.
However even importing the theme from my developers pc to my local pc caused the site to mess up due to URL’s pointing at his server rather than my local. I’ve found a few places that I’ve changed the URL in the database and I can now login. However a plugin that was working fine on his test server has now vanished! Shouldn’t the backup of the database have brought this plugin across?
I’m really worried about uploading this to my live site as I really don’t know what changes need to be made to all of the files to make sure that nothing breaks. Has anyone done this before and can show me what files I need to change to make this move trouble free?

  • The only time a theme normally stores anything in the db is when it has custom options. If a theme is using hardcoded permalinks/urls, then it’s badly written theme, in my opinion. Custom options apart, themes should be completely portable.
