Updating Plugins

  • Hi, so I’m mostly a novice with the backend of WP, but I know a little bit. I recently took over the design aspect of a site I’m part of that my friend no longer has time to manage. My problems have spiraled down down down.

    1. I updated WP to 4.0 and I’m trying to update my plugins and install new plugins as well. They fail each time saying
    “The package could not be installed. The package contains no files.

    Plugin update failed.” I read some old posts and people say this is likely because there’s nowhere in the FTP for the zip files to go to.

    2. Problem two is that I can’t connect via any FTP clients. Downloaded FileZilla and tried everything under the sun from their support forums and I keep timing out.

    3. I resorted to googling and editing the css stylesheet. Did some things I wanted to but ended up messing up the sidebar and now it’s all the way at the bottom of the page. Tried the markup validator site everyone always recommends and I have no idea how to differentiate what sheet the lines/columns this code is.

    Sorry to have so many questions, but I’m really down a hole and I’m really just trying to alter the design of my site and update/add new plugins.

  • Can’t say directly what issue 1 is about, but for issue 2 — you should contact your webhost and ask for all the login details (server, user, pass) to log in using FTP. They should be able to provide that to you.

    Then issue 3: open the stylesheet in your WordPress admin. Select everything (CTRL+A) and copy. Then paste it in a local text editor. Go to line 1452 and change the property for .site-content from:

    float: center;

    to:

    float:left;

    I assume that’s what you changed. Select all, copy, and paste it back into the WordPress editor, and save. That should get your sidebar back to the right.

    Okay that worked for #3. It was that, along with the float of the widget area I had messed up. Thanks a ton.

    Another question I had was adding an RSS feed for a podcast I’m about to do. I see on our sidebar at the bottom my co-blogger may have already added an RSS feed, but I don’t know if it’s current. I looked at a WP tutorial on what code to add, but I don’t know what sheet it goes in.
