    Hi all,

Is it safe to update a theme after I have built and customised it to my liking?
Everything works great at the moment and I’m paranoid about breaking things at this point. So, does updating a theme mess with the already made customisations? (I’m using the Storefront theme and no, I don’t have any child themes in use)

    Best wishes,
    Antti

  • Hello Antti,

Yes, if you’ve made changes to the parent theme, rather than the child theme, you will be losing the changes when you update the theme.

Once you have a complete backup of your store, I recommend:

    1. Creating a new child theme as per the instructions in https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/set-up-and-use-a-child-theme/
    2. Porting the customizations you’ve made to Storefront over to the child theme
    3. Updating your parent theme

This way, all your customizations will be retained in the child theme.

    Howdy!

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to go ahead and mark this thread as resolved. If you have any other questions please start a new thread.

    Cheers!
