Updating theme without live changes?

I am planning on purchasing a new theme for my blog but want to get it just right before going live with it. How on earth do I do this?? I am not from a technical background but know a good bit having taught myself a lot with regard to my blog, I just don’t know how this is accomplished. Can anyone offer guidance?
