    Hi there.

I am running a customized blog named https://www.tauschdeinauto.com
It was created by a freelancer and now I am running it by myself. After any plug-ins has been updated I figured out that Woocommerce is running on Version 5.6.2 (deactived due to strategic plans).

Now I would like to update it as well but not sure if there are hidden customized snippets which could cause some trouble…

    May someone could help me.

Thanks in Advance and best regards,
    Sebastian

  • Hey, I’m just going to chip in here! ??

I would assume a developer wouldn’t put their code into the plugin. If they HAD to do that I’m sure they would change the version number so the plugin wouldn’t search for updates (bad practice). However I guess we can’t make decisions from assumptions, so…

I would download a fresh copy of whatever WooCommerce version you’re currently on from WooCommerce’s releases page then extract the files and compare it to the files on your site. They should be identical.

For example, if your site is using “V1”, download a fresh copy of “V1” then use a code editing software such as VS Code to compare your V1 to the fresh V1. If there are inconsistencies your plugin is edited and you shouldn’t update without backing up.

If there are no changes when comparing to a fresh copy you’re good to update! ??

    Hi @sebastianandwordpressnew ,

    Thanks for reaching out!

This could be a bit tricky as custom code could be incompatible with various updates (WordPress/WooCommerce/themes/additional plugins), and on the other hand, not updating WordPress/plugins/themes could lead to limited functionality and compatibility issues.

Just to add to what @mattinventive has suggested, you could check if you have a plugin called Code Snippets installed, where custom code is usually added to allow for these to be included in updates.

Additionally, you can navigate to Appearance > Customize section of your dashboard, scroll down to the bottom of the page and check the Additional CSS box for any custom CSS.

Alternatively, you could download a backup of your full site and database, and update the WooCommerce version. If the update causes issues, you can always restore your site with the backup.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi @sebastianandwordpressnew

@mattinventive is actually a great suggestion!

You can also check the site’s plugins and look for any type of coding modifier there. WordPress/WooCommerce users usually go with [Code snippets](https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/code-snippets/).

If you are also interested in testing this before launching the update on the live site, you can always set a staging site: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-staging/
