Updating WordPress.. How do I back-up site?

  • So I get this prompt: WordPress 2.9.2 is available! Please update now.

    Then I get this prompt:

    Important: before upgrading, please backup your database and files.

    I see that I can upgrade automatically, but I am not familiar with backing up my site. What do I need to do to back-up my site? Is there a plugin that I need? If I upgrade will I run into problems if I don’t back up my site.. Whoever replies please be specific about the back-up process because I am new to all of this.. Thank you in advance for your assistance

    If I don’t back-up my site will i run into problems upgrading? I am going to back-up, but just wondering what type of problems would i run into if I didn’t back up site b4 upgrading

    Sometimes things go bump in the night and an upgrade does not work correctly and your base files (including database) can get messed up – having a backup at that time will make you much happier – it is a good idea to backup your site on a regular basis just in case something bad does happen.

    Ok.. Is most of the back-up from who ever host my site.. in my cpanel i see backup, etc? Is this where the core back-up is done for:

    1. WordPress Core Installation
    2. WordPress Plugins
    3. WordPress Themes
    4. Images and Files
    5. Javascripts, PHP scripts, and other code files
    6. Additional Files and Static Web Pages

    Using FTP to copy them to my computer ( I imagine I should put this on a zip, etc)

    What are other ways I should back-up? Any suggested plugins or other methods I should use to back-up.. I am using a template but am about to customize a new site.. So any input you have will be great.. THANKS
