Updating WordPress without losing the customizations.

    For some of my WP sites, I have done a lot of customizations on the code of WordPress core.

    What is the simplest way allowing me to update WordPress without losing my customizations, please?

    As the adage goes, don’t modify core files. Modifications can cause you will lose all changes when you next update the WordPress.

    In addition, modifications can cause:
    security risks,
    performance degradation,
    broken plugins/themes, etc.

    So, this is one of the many reasons why we recommend never modifying WordPress core.

    In this case, your only option is to compare every single WordPress 4.7 file to what you have. Then, either update every single file manually, or make a record of your core changes and re-apply them after the update.

    In the future, please consider developing a plugin for your changes, rather than modifying core files directly.
