• Yes…..that’s a big leap, isn’t it!! However, my admin panel has the button to do it (under Tools section) and says I can upgrade automatically. (a similar button exists on the Dashboard page)

I dare not hit that button…!

Can anyone tell me whether the 2.9.2 wordpress admin is telling me the truth or porkies?

    Thx
    Hugh

Not entirely sure what you mean by that but I imagine that upgrade will not go perfectly smooth. I would recommend cloning the site to a dev environment, run the upgrade and see what happens. That way you can make all the adjustments you need to without harming the production site. Then when you are satisfied, move the dev site to production and you should be good to go.

I have indeed backed up the database and site files!!

    Unfortunately…
    a) I don’t know how to clone to a dev environment (where, on another liver server or on localhost?)
    b) Can I just press the automatic update button on a localhost install and see what happens?
    c) “move the dev site to production”…… you mean the upgrade tested dev site?

This is an awful lot of moving files around!!

But I agree, better safe than sorry. Just not sure I’d do it right!
