I updated Celestial lite today and it said the theme is broken and reverted to twenty fourteen. YIKES!!

HELP!!! I don’t want to have to figure out all of my changes I made to the child theme all over again.

    It says stylesheet is missing.

That’s odd that happened to you because you are the only one that has experienced this out of the 1000+ updates others have done, so my guess is that something didn’t go 100% with your update. You can of course revert back to the previous version by clicking on Other Version 2.0.9 link (not the svn one) off the Developer tab https://www.ads-software.com/themes/celestial-lite/developers/

Unzip it and then using FTP, you can upload and replace the 2.1.0 files with the 2.0.9 files for Celestial lite.

You can also try once again and download the 2.1.0 (latest version) and unzip it to your desktop and then using FTP, upload to replace the existing theme files to see if your previous update did not go proper.

As a side note, any changes you made with your child theme won’t be lost because it’s not the child theme that gets updated, it’s the parent theme — Celestial Lite

I also did a test on my computer local site and installed the child theme and did not experience any problems.

    Hello.
I am having a similar problem (though I know I can’t say it’s the SAME problem, because of lack of evidence & information from katemcgill and myself).
In my case, what I can tell you is that I’m using WordPress 3.8.1, I’m using a child theme, and I’ve made several modifications to the .php files of the theme, in the past — You probably want to know which ones. But it’s been over six months, and I’m really not sure.

In the Dashboard, under Appeareance>Themes, I am given the following error message:

The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme.

I am going to attempt to reinstall 2.1.0 via FTP and see if that does the trick.
    More soon…

Manual download & FTP upload of 2.1.0 = Rousing success!! ??
    Thanks, StyledThemes.

katemegill, did you try this out?

Hmmm…. a second one to experience this. Hard to say what is happening, but as you mentioned mahlerthetitan, downloading, unzipping, and then uploading the update worked. Just have to wait and see if this works for @katemegill too.

Ah… I know what is happening!! I need to let WordPress know. Basically when you click to update, the theme Celestial Lite is replacing the previous version with an empty theme (no files) except a folder named “child-theme” which should contain a zip child theme. However, this is replaced by an SVN file name and 0 kb in size.

I’ve let the WP team know about this… in the meantime, updating the theme manually will work.

    Sweet, sweet resolution. ??

    Thanks again,StyledThemes.

Well, I was able to update it but all my customization is gone. GRRRRR!!!

Oh, that’s because the child theme is no longer there in my themes!! Oh man. This is the first time I’ve used child themes and it is driving me CRAZY! It took me a long time to work out what I wanted and I didn’t write down all the stuff I coded in. I’m about ready to cry!!!!!

Alright, now I’m really confused. I FTPd the celestial lite files into the celestial lite folder (I almost never use FTP so I’m hoping I followed the directions right). BUT in my Themes it shows only the Celestial Lite but no child theme.

However, below it it says that the parent theme is missing. I’m so confused I can’t even begin to understand what is going on.

Kate…. your child theme should not have been touched. When you update the parent theme, it’s only the parent theme that gets updated, not the child theme. The only way it would be affected is if you made changed to the parent theme files.

If you contact me from my website, and if you will grant me access to your dashboard, I will see what I can do here for you. I may need FTP access too if possible?

Sorry for the issue. One of the www.ads-software.com webservers had a bad ZIP file of this theme. The server has been kicked accordingly and now has a corrected file.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t fix your site, but you should be able to remove the bad directory and install the theme again to correct the issue.

Thanks Otto for the update and fix. I will wait for Kate to contact me and I will see what I can do to help her with the child theme; I don’t think she literally lost her child theme setup but will check this out.

I contacted you via the link above.

Got it…thanks. Your site is back in motion. As I mentioned in the email, and for others who may read this, I strongly recommend setting up a backup function with your site, either with a good quality plugin, or perhaps VaultPress. Anything that can backup the site, the files, and the database as well.

The important factor for everyone is to always keep regular backups because you never know what could happen.

But what is important, is that you got your site back ??

Unless you have any additional questions relating to this topic, is it safe to say this one can be set as “Resolved”?
