• I goofed up the upgrade and tried to go back to the back up, then back to the upgrade. Now I’m not sure which files are which. I can access the dashboard and my posts, but the home page gives me errors. Is it possible to do a clean install without creating a new database?

  • No – it’s not possible. Did you backup your database before upgrading?

The database is intact. I can post and change settings through the dashboard. The site doesn’t show up.

“Warning: require_once(./admin.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/daxmonta/public_html/index.php on line 10

    Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘./admin.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /home/daxmonta/public_html/index.php on line 10

    is on the home page…www.justdamn.com

I’ve spent over a week trying to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to upgrade manually as looks like it did not upgrade properly.

Back up your database and see if you can replace all files and folders except wp-content and wp-config.php and run upgrade.php

Thanks for your help. However the dashboard confirms that I had actually upgraded. My Blog is repaired now. In an effort to close out this post, I’ll relate where I believe I went wrong so that another might find it useful. I think that I overwrote the wp-content folder when I manually upgraded. Tip: Don’t do that. The upgraded version had an updated database, but no theme files. Therefore the Blog would not display, but I did get the dashboard. Using a backup, I uploaded only the old wp-content folder. The content then displayed. I then upgraded again to 3.1.1. problem resolved.

Following this thread-I upgraded manually as the Auto did not run. I can get the page up but cannot enter the admin. I get this message
Error 500 – Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.
I did back up WP Content and the wp-config so not sure what is going on. I have this loaded on a paid for server

Internal server errors (error 500) are often caused by plugin or theme function conflicts, so if you have access to your admin panel, try deactivating all plugins. If you don’t have access to your admin panel, try manually resetting your plugins, using ftp rename plugins folder to plugins_hold and create a blank plugins folder If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching Twenty Ten theme (WordPress 3.0 and higher) to rule-out a theme-specific issue. If you don’t have access to your admin panel, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the Default theme Twenty Ten theme (WordPress 3.0 and higher) to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.

If that does not resolve the issue, it’s possible that a .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via FTP or SFTP and rename the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, make sure that you have set your FTP or SFTP client to view invisible files. If you weren’t able to resolve the issue by either resetting your plugins and theme or renaming your .htaccess file, we may be able to help, but we’ll need a more detailed error message.

Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error log for any errors that occurred during that time period. If you don’t have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.

Thank you very much- I have downgraded again to access the system,. I did deactivate the plug-ins but I did not look at the .htaccess nor try different themes (I was using Themes). I had not thought of looking at my server log either so all really good advice!

I’ve been trying to upgrade to WordPress 3.1 and another “poll” plugin with no luck. It seems like whatever I try download to my site, it stalls. When I hit download automatically, it appears to download but just sits there doing nothing when it says it’s “unzipping”. Anyone else having these issues? I never had any issues downloading plugins or upgrades before.
    Thanks in advance!

I had exactly the same problem even though I had de-activated the plug-ins. Had to do it manually but read above!
