• I need to upgrade an old WordPress blog which currently is using version 2.5.1. to the latest 3.0.1 version. Is this possible by just downloading the 3.0.1 package? Or do I need to do something else when upgrading from such an old WordPress version?

    Thanks for any help or advice!

    You should do a step-upgrade.

    While it’s not mentioned here: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended#Detailed_Upgrade_Instructions_for_1.5.x.2C_and_versions_2.0_-_2.6.5.2C_to_3.0.1

    I would suggest upgrading from 2.5 -> 2.6 -> 2.8 -> 3.0.1

    And yes, I did skip over a couple. Those should be okay. If you’re nervous, and I wouldn’t blame you if you were, I’d do every point release (so 2.6 and 2.7 and so on, but NOT 2.7.2 etc).

    In theory, you can go straight to 3.0.1, but make same sure you have excellent backups first ??

    Thank you for the quick reply! I really appreciate your help. ??

    That looks to be a lot of work, doing a step-upgrade. They don’t have a lot of posts on their blog, mostly pages. So maybe it would be easier just to delete the current version and make a fresh installation with the latest WordPress version and manually save and re-publish the posts and pages?

    I am just worried their current template needs a lot of tweaks to work.

    Edit: I exported their posts, pages and comments from their current version to another wordpress blog running the latest version. It worked just fine. So I think I will just delete the old version and install the latest WordPress.

    Thanks for all the help!
