Hi all, I hope everyone is safe and healthy.

I have a website that is still running on Hueman 2.2.5, the latest iteration of the theme when it was developed by its original creator.

I’m looking at updating to PressCustomizr’s latest version.

Is anyone aware of incompatibilities, and/or is this almost five year version jump dangerous in any way?

These are the release notes of the theme versions around that time: https://github.com/presscustomizr/hueman/releases?after=v3.1.4

I am aware there is a “Hueman addon” plugin that adds some functionalities (like the Share bar) that were originally incorporated within the theme.

I run a child theme with light modifications (some custom CSS, and some additions to functions.php), which I should be able to control after the upgrade.

I’m just wondering if I am missing anything big, before clicking on “update theme” ??

    Any advice, much welcome.

    Thank you!

  • Hi Francesco,

If you can, first copy your site in a sandbox.
You should copy everything, all the folders and also the database.
Then you can check, if the upgrade is working.

    But I doubt!!!

At the upgrade from 2.2 to the new version and team, I had big problems with my site. I didn’t test in a sandbox at that time.

The latest upgrade makes troubles to many users. I just wait until the storm is over and then test the newest version in a sandbox.

There might be some css troubles with your child theme. Read first the last 100 entries in the support forum.

    Hi @waebi ,

Thank you for your input and advises. I ended up setting up staging environments and running possible different scenarios, and in the end the upgrade went smoothly – Much easier than I thought.

For the benefit of anyone else in a similar situation, I basically:

    • Did a full backup.
    • Set up a staging environment for the old set up, to compare visual differences once the upgrade was finished.
    • Started with a fresh, virgin child theme (empty style.css and functions.php).
    • Run the upgrade.
    • Went through the WP Customizer options one by one, and in many cases had to deactivate / reactivate any option to see changes being implemented (logos, previous colour schemes, etc)
    • Recreated widgets like “AxlTabs” (now Hueman Tabs), etc.
    • Added only the still relevant bits of CSS customisation to my child style.css.
    • Added more customisation to functions.php.
    • Removed plugins that provide functionalities now embedded in the theme, such as lazy loading or minification.

I think that’s pretty much the checklist I run through.
Good luck everyone, and thank you Press Customizr for keeping this wonderful theme so well oiled and for making it so good.
