Upgrade installation URL format question

At the beginning of the Upgrading WordPress instructions it says:

For these instructions, it is assumed that your blog’s URL is https://example.com/wordpress/.

My blog’s URL does not fit this format and I am concerned that this may somehow screw up the upgrade process. I have never before upgraded my blog software and have no idea what I’m doing. My URL is in this format: https://example.com/ Does this even matter? Can I go ahead and follow the instructions as they are provided?
