• I’m upgrading from 1.5. to the current version. Here are the upgrade directions:

    *************

    1. Download (https://www.ads-software.com/download/) and extract update files to a folder on your computer’s hard drive.
    2. On your host server site, delete your old WordPress files, but DO NOT DELETE:

    * wp-config.php
    * The wp-content folder

    3. Upload the new files from your computer’s hard drive to the appropriate WordPress folder on your site.

    (from here: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Upgrading_WordPress)

    *************

    Instruction 2 tells me to save two important files, whereas instruction 3 appears to indicate I overwrite the wp-content folder. True? It also appears I’m going to upload a config-sample file which doesn’t need to be there.

    Thanks in advance for any help y’all.

  • The instructions not to delete the wp-content folder is so that any custom themes/plugins are not removed. Overwriting it should be fine as this will not overwrite these custom themes/plugins.

    You’re correct, the config-sample file is not required. However, do not remove wp-config.php.

    Thanks. Still it’s confusing me to not delete a folder one second, but overwriting it a second later is okay. LOL. I guess it is different somehow.

    Two blogs fixed, one to go. Getting cocky now. Determined to not ask any questions for my bread and butter blog.

    Turns out this crazy config file I’m not supposed to delete IS the problem that has sent me down this road. It must have corrupted, because I deleted and replaced it and all is well… outside of my theme being broken. But hey, maybe it’s time to get a new one…

    LOL
