Upgrade plug-in doesn't work

    Any attempt to upgrade plugins on my site fails with an error message:-

    “Downloading install package from http:/” [etc.]
    “Unpacking the package.
    Could not create directory /httpdocs/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/” [name of plug-in folder] / [name of plug-in]

    I hope this is clear. Using FTP access to the site I see that CHMOD for the wp-content and sub-folders is set to 777, and that the Owner has rights to read, write and execute.

    Is this a problem with permissions or something else, and if so what?
