I was towards the end of an upgrade with the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin to upgrade to 2.3, (which if any of you out there are looking to use please save your self!)

The operation was unsuccessful and warning signs began to arise. When logging on I recieved a failure notice.
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare timer_stop() (previously declared in /home/sneaker/public_html/wordpress/wp-settings.php:84) in /home/sneaker/public_html/wordpress/wp-includes/functions.php on line 839

I have my Database backed up and my content folder seems to be still in tact. How can I reinstall without losing any of the posts or content.

    Please help!

You do NOT reinstall ever. Re-installing in the same place means wiping out all your existing posts. So, don’t even mention it!

You just have to try the upgrade again… and yes, never trust any gizmo that says it will do for you.
Deleting files and uploading new files via FTP shouldn’t be that difficult. And the whole upgrading is just that.
As the instructions say: delete all the files and folders (except wp-content folder, wp-config.php file and .htaccess file, if any) and upload the new package.
Then go and run the wp-admin/upgrade.php file.

I’m hosted on an iPower server. They provide WordPress in what they call InstallCentral. I didn’t have to do anything but press a button to install. When an upgrade appeared, they had it and the upgrade worked fine. This time, however, they don’t have it and just keep telling me to check with WordPress.

I suspect that following the installation process is a formula for wiping out everything I’ve got. I’ve done a back up but I’m not at all clear about the instructions MOSHU fereferences. Are there some upgrade instructions somewhere?

How can I safely go about doing this. I’m not server savvy but I do know how to use an FTP program or I could just put the files in my dreamweaver directory and ftp them that way. I just want to know for sure what files constititue the upgrade.

    Thanks.

    1. Don’t ever use DW!
    2. Seemingly, you never visited the Codex, the online manual: Codex

    moshu,
I’m not sure if the php code is still intact, or if that plug in wrote over some of the files.
So im thinking of doing this.. erasing the files of the plug in and starting the reintallation process as it never happend hopefull this works.
Just out of curiousity is it possible if you have all the content and the database backed up to re install and upload the content. Will I Lose all my backlinks..
    Let me know.
    Thanks.

WHy do you have this obsession with re-installing? That never fixes anything.

Im afraid of losing my content and backlinks… How do i know if everything is intact, do you know if the plug in writes on any of the previous files.. Those files may be corrupt.
Also is there any service you know that will do a dignostic on my wordpress.

You can ask on wp-pro list somebody (for a fee) to have a look at your site.

    Moshu,
How can I be sure if my wp-content folder, wp-config.php file and .htaccess file are still intact.

Why is that fatal error message there, is that in the Content folder or wp-Config folder.

Does that mean theres a problem with the database itself or any of the neccassar files to do the upgrade. How can this be fixed.

Yeah, I just didn’t realize that Installation and Upgrade were two separate links and only looked at the first. Sorry.

Is there a reason I shouldn’t use Dream Weaver as an FTP client? I wouldn’t try editng any files with DW.

There were too many complaints about messed up blogs after using DW… some people don’t even know how to switch to ‘code mode’… and for FTPing I don’t know how trustworthy it is. It is probably, perfect for files created in DW, but I am sure it is messing with the WordPress php files.

what kind of platform are you on? if you are on a mac i can recommend a very easy but fully equipped ftp client.

btw – i had no problem with DW (but listen to moshu) this client is so much easier, and faster than DW i never use DW anymore.

I have moved themes and plugin folders using DW, but I decided to install an FTP client–CoreFtp yesterday. Seemed easy and straightforward.

Well, until I actually tried to move a file into the WP directory. No permissions. I couldn’t overwrite or delete despite that CoreFtp reported drwxr-r-r- privileges on the folder.

I used the server filemanager to change those privileges to match those which did work with files I had created. Still no permission.

I called iPower support who asked me to do basically what I had already doneand then asked me to use FireFtp inside Firefox. Same problem even though FireFtp tried to help me change permission–access to change them was denied.

I’ve got a help ticket outatanding with iPower.

Suddenly the upgrade has become very difficult. I wonder why iPower doesn’t simply supply it as an upgrade from their install central like they did previously?

hope you are up by now…

i had a similar problem. i tried on cpanel and ftp client and could not change permissions. the isp fixed everything at their end. it was a server thing.

at my isp however, depending on who is helping you, some feel it is a connectivity issue and they help you. if they feel it is a wp problem you are back here to the forum.

your isp sounds like they support wp issues.
