Upgrade to 3.0.1, wp-admin now slow

    Alright, guys. I need your help! I was running a stable 3.0 multisite build with Buddypress enabled. 3.0.1 has been available for quite some time but I was always hesitant about doing the upgrade. Well, lo and behold, I upgrade and the horror began. The WordPress backend, wp-admin, has become sluggishly slow. I’d be alright if it only took 10-30 seconds, but it takes it, on average, 5 minutes to go to the next page. Everything functions, I can install plugins, download them, add posts, etc. I just have to wait 5 minutes each time after clicking to the next step. Sorry if I’m on the wrong thread, I’m not trying to be!

    I’ve tried the following:

    – Renaming Plugins/Removing Them Entirely
    – Reverted to 2010 Theme
    – Installed WP-DB Manager to help me repair/optimize tables.
    – Changed all permissions to 0755.
    – Updated the theme I was using/Checked their forums to see if there were any problems.(There were none)
    -Increased the amount of RAM a script could use to the insane amount of 256.

    My front end seems to run very smoothly(due to its traffic I switched it back to the theme I was using). This is just the back end, and only after upgrading to 3.0.1. If I try reinstalling, it always goes to the page where it asks for my ftp credentials which is odd because it doesn’t ask me to do so on the plugins. Should I try to manually install 3.0.1 and see if that fixes the issue?(Just had that thought)

  • Have you tried:

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress?

    That you for the reply.

    -I double-checked to make sure that my plugins were indeed reset. I even went as far to make sure that all the sub-directory sites were reset to.

    – I used FileZilla to throw wp-admin and wp-includes across to the server. These were, of course, downloaded form a fresh download!

    Sadly, still same results. ??

    Just a quick question.
    How do you reset folders/plugins folder?

    Do you mean re-upload the original folders form a fresh install?

    If you notice, Esmi’s suggestion is a hyperlink blue. I bet that will take you to a place where you’ll know what resetting the plugin folder means. ??

    As for my problem, it still exists. I’m currently going through the tables and seeing if there’s anything out of place in them.

    Well, I was able to solve the problem. What exactly caused it, I may never know, but at least I found a solution.

    My fix was:
    – Created a new database
    – Installed WordPress 3.0.1 on it by using a new wp-config page.
    – Imported old database .sql file.
    – Went back to wp-config, turned on and configured multisite.

    Everything is completely back to normal now, albeit a different database. This should be pretty similar to reinstalling WordPress, but I was afraid of something going wrong in my original database so I just created a new one to play around on. Everything transferred and is now working very quickly.

    Thank you, Esmi, for your support. I find some humor in you helping me, because before posting I spent a good day googling for the answer. It led me to several different posts to which you had replied to. Some of them were hilarious because you simply suggesting resetting the plugins made some of them furious, and even one went so far as to ask you to stop replying. ??

    I know it irritates some people but that’s WordPress Troubleshooting 101 for you. Plugin & theme issues/conflicts account for about 90% of all problems, so it makes sense to first isolate where the problem is.

    I read somewhere that the problem could be something with askimet plugin. In fact I deactivated the Askimet plugin and things start working fine. Even better was when I installed ‘Hyper Cache Extended’ plugin and my site was running like a rabbit! ??
