New to forum – I have one site, https://www.catacombsociety.org, running on WP.org Motif Child theme. Launched in July, 15, worked almost perfectly until a week ago, when I received alert to upgrade to 4.5.2. Since the upgrade, the front end of the site has been loading very slowly, and as an administrator, I can’t get beyond the initial Dashboard page to make any edits/posts, add users, etc. Each time I go to a basic command, like “Add New Post” (to a blog) or “Add User”, I receive one of several messages on white screen:
    500: Internal server error

    1. This error is generated when a script running on the server could not be implemented or permissions are incorrectly assigned for files or directories
    Troubleshooting suggestions:
Temporarily disable any rewrite rules by renaming your .htaccess file if it exists.
Ensure that any CGI or Perl scripts have at least .755. permissions.
If trying to run PHP and you get this error, you may have an invalid php.ini in your /cgi-bin, or may be missing your php.dat file in this folder.

    2.
Function.mysql-query]: MySQL server has gone away in /data/17/1/98/131/1098131/user/1148591/htdocs/_wp/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1813
Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Error reading result set’s header in /data/17/1/98/131/1098131/user/1148591/htdocs/_wp/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1813

The problem is, my bosses do not understand what the problem is, and think it is not a coding issue. How can I communicate to them in plain English what is wrong? I am a secretary, not a programmer, but I want to understand and resolve the issue ASAP! Thanks!

  • Have you tried:
-deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. You can do this with ftp or using the file manager provided by your host. Rename the wp-content/plugins to wp-content/plugins-old.

Thank you! This is helpful. As an administrator, not a programmer, I cannot log into the site to make changes. How does one have alternate access to the plug in folders? I can try to get in the back end, if I know where to look. Apologies in advance if this issue seems very trivial: just I’m not the one who designed the site (designer not available).

Using ftp or the file manager provided by host (where you blog is hosted) rename wp-content/plugins to wp-content/plugins-old.
