Contact your hosts. It sounds like they are blocking www.ads-software.com.
They might have done something on the particular server your blog is hosted on, and probably they forgot something

Thanks, Tara! Somehow, this doesn’t sound right to me. For example, I can source an iframe from the domain in question to www.ads-software.com and it comes up without error.

A brief conversation with the host also reveals that if the www.ads-software.com domain has been blocked, then he doesn’t know about it.

Can you think of any other reason why this might be happening?

    – Ask your webhost if the DNS are set up correctly?
    – Ask your host; they may have something funky with DNS or local caching

It’s an existing site that has been working properly for several years – wouldn’t that argue for correct DNS settings?

In my conversation with the web host (I use them on many domains, some are on this same server), I confirmed that there is no local caching.

Might I just install the upgrade manually?

    Any firewall?

Might I just install the upgrade manually?

    – If you want to do that, try reading the Manual Update directions first!
BTW, if you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. It’s a great safety net.

Hmm – I am getting the same error when I try to upgrade a plugin, too!

    Downloading update from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/add-link-to-facebook.1.209.zip…

Download failed. Couldn’t resolve host ‘downloads.www.ads-software.com’

    Return to Plugins page

Thank you for creating with WordPress.

    Get Version 3.9.1

I may be wrong, but it looks like a server issue.

What I don’t understand is why I can see the www.ads-software.com home page in an iframe on a page in the site in question, but I cannot resolve www.ads-software.com when trying to upgrade to WP3.91!

In case a bad plugin is causing any trouble, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems (because the hooks remain unless plugins completely removed or some plugins stick around in cached files. So by renaming the folder, you break them and force them inactive).

Bingo. It was a plugin that was blocking the upgrade.

Thank you so much for sticking with me on this!

    You can mark this resolved.
