• Well I’ve been happily using my old 2.3 WordPress for ages but since it kept nagging me to upgrade I decided to bite the bullet and do the upgrade.

Downloaded, unzipped and replaced the directories I was supposed to replace (according to the quick & easy upgrade instructions). Went to my site to see the wonders of Version 3.

But I only get a blank screen. It killed my site.

Nothing, nada. Just the blank screen

    What do I do now?

(I’m a enthusiastic amateur and don’t know much about any programming, so answers will have to be of the kind that a blonde can understand even though I am a brunette)

    Thanks…

Try resettings your plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

I can’t get to any plugins. I see nothing at all, blank screen. How do I reset plugins if I cannot even get to them?

Follow the link in my reply.

Sorry I meant to say I did the renaming etc already via ftp but it does not help. I still just get the blank screen and at the bottom it tels me “done” – so it is not finding anything…

    Really weird and frustrating

Thanks Manx I did that already (see my previous reply) but nothing happens. I als checked that all the (new) files for the admin &include folders were copied over from the unzipped folder

Should I perhaps delete all other files (apart from the content ones) as well? I am too scared to just do it… (this comes from reading the extended version of the upgrade thingy)

    If the answer is yes

I have a copy of my existing config.php file, if I DO delete all the other files as well, could I use that one to save some time?

Try the phpMyAdmin method, it usually works better.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename everything except the /twentyten/ directory. This will force the Twenty Ten theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.

If the newly force-activated Twenty Ten theme is also blank, download WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of the /wp-admin/ and /wp-includes/ directories with fresh copies from the download.

the phpMyAdmin method is greek to me… I have no idea how that works…. read my original post. I am a lady who is feeling very cold (winter here) and frustrated late at night with this darn thing and no ways am I going to be able to figure out phpMyAdmin unless you can give me some simple instructions.

Sorry to be such a pain…

    phpMyAdmin is usually available through your hosting provider’s control panel. Use that to access your WordPress database, browse the wp_options table, look under the option_name column for the active_plugins row, and change the entire option_value field to a:0:{}

My old 2.3 WordPress files (I kept the Content directory intact as instructed) does not even seem to have a Twenty Ten theme… so which one should I try then?

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

In that case, rename everything except the /default/ directory.

    Thread Starter grinz50

    (@grinz50)

Sorry MacManx but I don’t understand a word of that – I cannot find any phpMyAdmin thought my hosts’ contol panel and don’t even know where to look for the database itself

I’m really battling here… sorry, as said, I really don’t understand what you were telling me to do

    Thread Starter grinz50

    (@grinz50)

OK will try that & see what happens

    (@grinz50)

Did that and I am still faced with an empty, white page when I try and open my site.

The next thing would be to download WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of the /wp-admin/ and /wp-includes/ directories with fresh copies from the download.

If that doesn’t work, then you should probably restore from a backup (if you have one) and try the upgrade again following the “semi-official” WordPress major upgrade path:

    1. Backup the files and the database.

    2. Download WordPress 2.5.

    3. Do a manual upgrade to WordPress 2.5.

    4. Repeat step 1, but don’t replace the previous backup (keep both on hand).

    5. Download WordPress 2.7.

    6. Do a manual upgrade to WordPress 2.7.

    7. Repeat step 1, but don’t replace the previous backup (keep both on hand).

    8. Use WP’s automated upgrade to system to upgrade to 2.9.2.

    9. Repeat step 1, but don’t replace the previous backup (keep both on hand).

    10. Use WP’s automated upgrade to system to upgrade to 3.0.

OK well I am totally lost and it seems like a terribly long process to get through what was originally supposed to be a 5 minute process.

My hosts do not seem to have the phpMyAdmin support and I am now literally too scared to change anything.
