actually, it looks like the update was from 3.3.1 or 3.3.2

May be you did not updated properly and from the error looks like is wp-includes folder replace wp-incudes folder from fresh download do not overwrite replace it by deleting the folder.

No, it is 3.4. The problems seems to be caused by your theme cloriatotheme.
You may revert to the default theme twentyeleven and see if the problem persists.

how does one revert to another theme when you can’t access the Dashboard?

    popper

    (@julialasarte)

Just access your site via ftp and delete/rename the folder of your theme. WordPress will revert back to the default theme.

installed a backup copy of the site in another directory with a new db then performed the 3.4 update from 3.3.1

The update occurred then presented this screen:
    https://screencast.com/t/MKXoDdCHCTjQ

Authorized the db update and received this screen:
    https://screencast.com/t/m9qGoszf5

So it seems that the 3.4 update is creating the problem

popper, I deleted the theme from the WPContents folder and the site now serves blank

Can you revert to the default WordPress theme? You are having problems from your current theme cloriatotheme as far as I understand. I mentioned it here.

No, it is 3.4. The problems seems to be caused by your theme cloriatotheme.
You may revert to the default theme twentyeleven and see if the problem persists.

You did not try that I think. You are mixing up many issues, instead of concentrating on the identified problems. No, 3.4 is NOT creating problems. Unless you try what you are advised to do, what is the fun in guessing that “3.4 update is creating the problem” ?

Krishna, I reloaded the backup (in another directory) to get a good installation. I reverted the theme to the 2011 Theme (default) and performed the 3.4 update and still have identical problem.

    Any other ideas?

In which URL can I see your new installation now?

I wish to correct the active installation as there has been many changes to the site since the backup that I am using at https://thedivineiswithinus.com/rei/

Is it OK? Still problems? I find it fine.

this installation is fine because I did not do the 3.4 update to this one.

The install just prior to this one, I changed the theme to 2011 prior to updating to 3.4. Then I performed the update and got identical results.

So,I have reinstalled. If you would like WP credentials to see results for yourself, register and I will change you to admin.

No, I do not want any credentials. I can see it as it is.
    Now the other questions are:
    1. Don’t you want to install 3.4?
    2. Will your site remain at the same location (URL) or not?
    3. Login and see if you find any other problems.
    4. Try to do a test post and see if any problems are there.
