I was automatically upgraded to WP 3.5

Everything seems to have gone smoothly – apart from when i go to add a post. I now can do nothing in “visual” mode – it is white text against a white background, i have to highlight to see if anything is there. And the formatting toolbar has gone from across the top – where it used to be next to the insert media option.

This is across both of my websites – each with a different theme, so i don;t think it’s that.

has anyone had the same issue, and how do i resolve this?

Did you try to enable the javascript console on your browser? When you did what were the error messages (if any) that appeared?

This is from this portion of the link Andrew provided.

    Thanks jan!

I couldn’t work out how to the script debug (i’m not really very good with all this web stuff!)

But i did get this when using the javascript console on each of my sites…
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method ‘add’ of undefined

    Is this fixable?

    Probably. ??

Much of the WordPress functionality requires that javascript works on your site. So try these steps and you can hopefully identify where the conflict is coming from.

I wrote this up for another thread (and really need to save this somewhere…), try this and please do not leave out a single step.

    1. Deactivate all of your plugins. Really, everyone of them and no exceptions.
    2. Switch to the Twenty Eleven theme. Someday, probably soon, I’ll tell people Twenty Twelve but for now use Twenty Eleven.
    3. Clear your browsers cookies and cache. This is an important step because javascript files can be cached on your browser.
    4. Re-login to your WordPress installation.
    5. Create a new post and see if the Visual Editor works or not.

Don’t skip any steps and definitely clear out your browser’s cache and cookies. Using a base WordPress installation like that (for now) will hopefully let you see if it’s theme or plugin related.

Remember that this is a temporary step and you can always reactivate your plugins and switch your theme back to the way it was.

Let us know how you make out with that. If that does not work then you’ll need to proceed with other steps to diagnose your problem.

Hi jan – Thanks for this, i followed your instructions, and even in twenty eleven theme, and cleared cache and cookies i still cannot use the visual tab, see the text formatting toolbar or insert images ??

Ok, leave that like it is (also a link to your site wouldn’t hurt) and try the following.

    – Make a backup copy of your wp-config.php file and put that somewhere safe.

    – Copy that wp-config.php to wp-config-SAVE.php (I really like multiple safety nets).

    – Open the wp-config.php file using the most basic text editor you have. Windows notepad is good for this and add this line above the “stop editing” line so it looks like this:

    define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false);
/* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */

Save that, clear your browser cache and cookies, re-login and try again.

Have I mentioned that a link to your site doesn’t hurt either? ??

Also if your site is the same as in your profile, you are running version 2.0 of that theme. The theme vendor is up to version 2.6 and that really could be the problem too.

    You’re welcome, glad it’s working now. ??

    Hello!
    and happy new year!

I have got the same issue as shughes, it’s not fixed despite the uninstallation of all the plugins
    my blog : https://www.Bestmusicspots.com

i’ve got a couple of questions for Jan :
    – I’ve done a full website back-up, does that work instead of backing-up only the wp-config.php file? if not, how do i proceed to find and back up the file?
    – Where/how do i access the wp-config.php file to edit it ?

i know these questions are basic but i’m a new bee ??

    thanks for your support

@lolonyc You really need to start your own thread. This one has been marked resolved and not a lot of people look at those.

I or some other volunteer would be happy to pick of the conversation on your own thread.

    ok, i’ll do

About Editor stuck in text mode..

It turns out that in my case, my hosting service provider upgraded to 3.5 using a Patch ( i suspect, if there is such a thing ).

After the install, clicking for visual mode editing was causing javascript error – Type error undefined ‘d.canvas’ .

My fix was to re-install wp_include folder from wp 3.5 package.

    Hope this helps.

Jan’s fix with wp-config.php was exactly what I needed! Thank you very much. Helpful post!
