Upgraded to WordPress 4.4, now can't connect to PayPal Pro

  • When I upgraded to WordPress 4.4, it somehow broke my connection PayPal Pro. I am using the Shopp plugin. Here’s the error I get when trying to communicate with PayPal Pro:

    Please correct the following errors:

    PayPal Pro: Could not connect to the payment server. SSL certificate problem, verify that the CA cert is OK. Details: error:14090086:SSL routines: SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE: certificate verify failed For help with this, contact the website administrator. (WP_HTTP)

    I wasn’t sure if this error is with WordPress, or if it’s with the plugin, or if it’s with PayPal? I’m kind of lost and was hoping someone had an idea of where I can start on the path to fixing.

    In the meantime, downgrading to WordPress 4.3.1 fixes the connection with PayPal Pro.
