• Hey everyone,

When I try running upgrade.php, I get the following error message:

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

    * Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    * Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    * Are you sure that the database server is running?

Now I know I have the database user name and password in the wp-config.php file. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!
    Lisa

  • Have you checked with your host to make sure that apache’s running?

Also…assuming the problem is with apache, it might be worth trying the update again. Someone else may have reported the problem and your host may have restarted apache…

Thanks hoopla. I haven’t checked with my host since I had to step out, but I will now that you’ve mentioned it.

Hey again folks, I just checked on my host’s website and it says that everything is up and running just fine. And I’m still getting that error message about not being able to establish a database connection. Does anyone know what else the problem could be? Thanks again.

This may seem obvious, but are you using the exact same wp-config.php that you were using previously? It didn’t get copied over when you uploaded the 1.5.1.2 files did it?

Actually, I think I deleted the original wp-config.php file. But I’ve made a new one and changed my database password, but still I get that same error message.

Has your database access information changed? Have you double checked to make sure that you have the right username and password. If your hosting is with cPanel, did you remember to append yourcpanelusername and an underscore to whatever the database name and database username you gave it?

I’m positive I entered my SQL database name and user name and password correctly.

I mean I keep checking it and everything looks correct.

Well something must be amiss in that config file. Try starting a completely new database and see if you can connect to it. What host do you have? Do they have information about connecting to MySQL?

Sorry, but something in my gut tells me you’ve made a silly mistake that you’ll be kicking yourself over when you figure it out. Quadruple check the config. Good luck!
