After many months of thinking ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ I’ve decided it may be time to upgrade to the latest version of WP, just so that I am not left behind with new features etc

However, I am VERY nervous about doing this, especially as I see so many posts on here about people having problems with 2.8. Is the latest version 2.8.4 more stable than previous versions? Is there anything I should be extra cautious about seeing as I’m upgrading from such an old version?

I haven’t done an upgrade before, and in fact even had a bit of a nightmare when trying to install WP initially when I first started using it – I’m not very familiar with using databases etc

I’ve read the articles on backing up the database and how to upgrade but it’s a lot to take in and I’m worried I’ll miss something out that will break my blog or my plugins (although I don’t use many, just one for stats, lightbox, one for spam and another that forget the name of right now).

So any last minute advice would be very much appreciated. I’d really like to have it all go as smooth as possible with as little disruption to my visitors as I can get, as I get a good flow of traffic every day so don’t want the site down for too long if I can help it!

    Thanks all

  • I would try the upgrading on my local machine at first, after that is successful, then upgrade on the server machine.
With these steps, I will have no chance to mess up the real site.

Great, thanks for the tip. Not totally sure how I would go about upgrading on my local machine first though (I mean I know how to download the newer version but not sure how I would install and check it on my computer before sending to the server).

Is there somewhere I can read how to do this? Thanks again.

I would not do a local upgrade as you will have problems with image links, etc
    just follow this guide

pay particular attention to steps 7 & 8

Thanks samboll. I’m all backed up and ready to go, just one final question…and I assume it’s one that is pretty obvious but as I’ve never upgraded before I thought I’d check…

When I upgrade, will all my blog pages urls stay the same? I mean the permalinks, that won’t change right as the main content files of my posts won’t have been altered in any way. I currently have ‘Day and Name’, so as long as I use that setting in the new version of WP all my links should reamin intact…correct? Would hate for the many many links I have out all over the next to suddenly not worked when clicked on!!

I’m done, all updated, plugins upgraded and so far the blog appears to be running as normal. Thanks for the help ??
