• wanted to upgrade my wp 1.2.1 to wp 1.5 and I read the intrustions provided in the WP Codex site and followed it but instead I get a message like this when I run wp-admin/install.php:

Warning: main(../wp-config.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/nimrode/public_html/admin.php on line 2

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required ‘../wp-config.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /home/nimrode/public_html/admin.php on line 2

Then I noticed that I did not delete my old ‘wp-admin’ etc directories so I deleted them and created new ones but I’m not sure which files are supposed to go in them because some of the files are different from the old wp 1.2.1 ones. So I left them empty but that doesn’t make sense to me.

So what did I do wrong actually? Do I really need to create the directories myself or would wp do it for me? Cos I can’t run wp-admin/install.php

Really really hope someone can help me fast.

  • If you upgrade, you do not run install.php, you run upgrade.php

The error you have is because your files are mixed up, and I can’t see where this ‘admin.php’ is coming from – is this a file of yours ?

It still doesn’t work when I run ‘wp-admin/upgrade.php’ I followed the instructions when uploading the wp a.5 files. I just deleted all my old wp files and folders and uploaded the new ones but I did not put them into folders like ‘wp-admin’ ‘wp-plugin’ and the such since I’m not sure which ones go into which folders and which ones can be left outside…… so what did I do wrong actually?

What did you use to unzip the downloaded package? If it works normally it should have created the folders, so after that you can upload the WP files organized in their folders.

I used winzip. but when I first opened the unzip package, there were’t any folders inside it. Just a bunch of individual files…

ok. I think I have the folders already. *yay* One last question though, do I really delete ALL the old files and folders including the .htaccess?

Yes. All – maybe except your wp-config.php file (so you don’t have to make it again ??
Warning: If you have a special customized style that you want to convert later into a WP 1.5 theme, you may want to read this guide and this one.
