Upgrading to 2.5

Before doing anything backup your database(s) and all of your themes. Also, check that the plug-ins are compatible with the new version–there’s a list available.

Not impossible, just not fun and plenty nerve wracking givenall the work ‘ve putinto my site.

Has anybody developed an automated process for upgrading to 2.5?

automated == ftp

1. Make sure you have a backup youre happy with.
2. disable plugins.
3. upload files.
4. click one page.

whats so hard?

Its even easier if you have shell access.

I understand WP is deeloping a way to do upgrades like you suggest wanting, but I question trusting a third party script to do that. I wouldnt, at least – but hey, it’s your work.

The fear is screwing it all up. I’ll have no one else to blame but myself. ??

and tb, my instructions were over-simplified, for the sake of illustration — always follow the upgrade instructions in the codex.

I’d recommend against upgrading on a live site. This version has major changes and you are likely to have issues, especially with the new image insert/edit.

2.5 works with most plugins, so your site may still appear OK to visitors, but the admin has changed quite a bit.

I tried upgrading on a test account that has most of my favorite plugins, and it only choked on Kimili Flash Embed.

However, the new image insert/edit did not work at all. I’m going to wait a few more weeks before upgrading live sites.

2.5 admin is very nice except for that bug on my site… I was hopeful, but had to revert to 2.3.3 — a good and stable version.

Pointing people directly to the upgrade page is unnecessary. The admin pages have been detecting the need for the database upgrade for quite a while now. Immediately after upgrading and attempting to login to wp-admin, it will tell you if the database needs an upgrade and will give you a link to click to do it. Trust it.

I’m currently seeing this message after an update:

WordPress 2.5.1 is available! Please update now.

I manually updated word press by creating a fresh directory, moving my custom templates, files and directories to it, telling the new wordpress the DB details etc, and it all updated fine, by the looks of it, but I am still being asked to update? where is this flag being set and can I manually change it?
I am comfortable hacking then dataabae or editing text files so treat me like a coding expert rather than novice – might save you typing time! I spent two hours manually looking for where this could be set with no success.

I eventually got all of my sites updated to 2.5… but it seemed to work better on the ones where I waited until 2.5.1. Everyone is loving the new features once they get used to the radically different admin and wysiwyg interfaces. I am totally enthralled with the plugin update system… but I do worry that the greater dependence on centralized system could become a vulnerability.
