I would like to upgrade to the newest version of WP but I’m really afraid to do so. I’ve backed up my database but the instructions also say to back up back up my WordPress files, which starts getting technical (which I am not!)

What I am afraid of is that I will lose the changes I made to my theme. I spent a week or so modifying my theme but this was about 4 years ago and I don’t even remember now what the changes were. If I lose them, would I have to start over to recreate it?

I really want to upgrade but worry about potential problems which I would have to spend hours and hours figuring out how to solve.

    Thanks for any help!

PS I did a backup through my cpanel and got an email that it was complete but it isn’t in a file form that I can open. It’s just an email that starts like this:

QUOTAS HAVE BEEN VERIFIED. YOUR DATA IS NOW BEING BACKED UP!
    block_curr 85788
    block_soft 1023998976
    block_hard 1023998976
    block_timelimit 0
    inode_curr 2081
    inode_soft 0
    inode_hard 0
    inode_timelimit 0

One reason I really need to update is that my blog will no longer display photos through the photo editor, I get only coding. I can only think that it has something to do with a needed upgrade.

    Thanks!

If you have a theme that you are using that 4 years old most likely may not be compatible as latest wordpress 3.2.1 use different theme structure.

What version wordpress are using now as upgrading will have to be done in steps manually.
