• While upgrading wordpress 3.3.3 to 3.4 i lost all my featured images, After that i had to fix one by one after the upgrading process was done! So now i think about to upgrade from 3.4 to 3.4.1! The images will be lost again? Why it is like that? Its a general bug on new WP? Probably we have to wait for vers 3.5 to made it work?

anyone checked? Or it is basicly work fine now? I dont wanna lost all my featured images again, so its very important to know for me… thx in advance!

I have upgraded 8 sites, and not one of them had any issues with featured images being lost….

It’s also not listed in the master troubleshooting list for 3.4, yours seems to be an isolated case

    Hi there,

It’s not really an isolated problem.
I have the same problem here.
I was using the Flexibility 3 theme at the time I have upgraded WordPress.
After that many of my featured images were missing.
I’m also using a plugin to generate featured images automatically. When I run this, only 25 out of some hundreds of posts get generated. When I set them by hand, they are back. But it’s too much work to recreate them by hand.
Is there any other plugin / feature to regenerate featured images automatically?

So that’s 2 people in 1 week. Out of how many million upgrades? Guys, this is site specific. You have out-of-date plugins and/or themes.

The upgrade didn’t cause my problem, but the problem is the same. I changed themes (2 different themes on 2 different websites) and both times the featured images no longer display. I tried several different thumbnail regeneration plugins, but they didn’t help. I can manually set the featured image for each post, but on one of the blogs I have over 1000 posts. There must be some way to automatically reset all the featured images, but I can’t find it. Help!

The only plugin is Akismet and the theme is updated to 3.4.1.

ok thx for replie and inform, seems like i dont will upgrade next time, cause i dont want left 100′s of featured images again ?? manually re add was still a torture…

PS: I use latest *ARTISTEER* self generated theme wich always had no problems on previous upgrading processes!

@esmi, I wouldn’t say that this is site-specific, nor would I say it’s the result of out of date plugins/themes.

I just did a fresh install of WordPress 3.4.1, and with no plugins and no themes installed, there is no option to enable featured images. It’s not visible on the right side of a new post, nor is the checkbox available in the Screen Options drop-down. A recent installation of 3.3 does indeed have this option available.

    >>and with no plugins and no themes installed, there is no option to enable featured images.<<

You HAVE to have a theme installed. If you don’t have a theme installed, then you’ll absolutely not have featured images (or anything else for that matter, like menus, headers, etc). You have to activate menus and featured images in the functions.php file *of your theme*. if the theme doesn’t enable it (or it’s too old to have that feature), then you won’t have the feature.

    the line is this:

    add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' );

if that’s not in your theme’s functions.php file you won’t have it. It *is* in the default twentyten and twentyeleven themes.

If you had featured images at one time, the images are still in your database – it’s either a plugin or a theme that’s installed that is conflicting/removed the feature. You just have to add it back in to pull everything out like it was before.

For some reason this doesn’t work with me after adding the php script….

    It’s a nightmare re-uploading things too !
