• Hi,

I’m trying to fix a webpage that is currently using WP 3.5.1 and as much as I know then I shouldn’t upgrade it to the newest 5.4 at the first go. In hopes that I won’t mess up the webpage I wanted to ask what is the most reasonable way to do it. Should I start updating it by two points (3.5 to 3.7 and so on) or can I skip some versions?

    Thanks,
    Mari

  • Hello,

I don’t have an official answer to you, but I can already tell you’ll be asked: can you easily make a full backup of your blog (both files, and database) as it is hosted at the moment?
(I’ll highlight this, you cannot just backup the files, the database is stored separately and it’ll rely on your web host to process the backup for you, sometimes it’s super easy to find and perform, sometimes it’s not so obvious.)

If the answer is “yes, it’s easy to make a backup and restore it”, then the conclusion is “sure, go for it, try a straight update to wordpress 5.4, and if it fails, restore the backup and wait for further forum replies”.

try a straight update to wordpress 5.4

It may be problematic, as it requires an more-or-less up to date version of PHP.

    If you have PHP 5.6.20 – 5.6.40
You can directly upgrade to WordPress 5.6
    ALways make a backup

If you have older version of PHP, i suggest you to update manually (replace wp-admin, wp-includes folders and PHP files at your site from release archive
    https://www.ads-software.com/download/releases/ )
Your best choice is WordPress 4.9.13

After updating to 4.9 , updating plugins, theme
You shall consider updating PHP. It should be at least mentioned 5.6.20+
But PHP 7.2+ is strongly advised.

After updating PHP, and ensuring that your site is working properly, you can proceed with further updates for WordPress, plugins and theme.

So, PHP versions would cause a problem? I didn’t think of that, I’m humbly sorry! I was imagining that wordpress’ own core would accept to work even on old PHPs. Again, sorry.
This php7 switch really comes with trouble, so much software ceased to be downwards compatible at this occasion :/
