Upload issues

  • When I attempt to upload media I get this message:
    Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2014/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
    If I attempt to upload themes or plug-in I get a similar message.
    If I search for themes or plug-ins and install via that method I’m asked for my ftp password each time. But it does at least work.
    How do I get around this?
