Uploaded jpg are under 1mb, generated webp 3mb+

Hi @orlandosydneyphotographer, thanks for getting in touch. I’d be happy to check this for you. To do so, please could you share your Site Health information?so that I can check your current setup for anything that may stand out.

Could you also share one of the images you have experienced this with so that I can run some tests with it myself. Let me know if you have any other questions at this time.

@orlandosydneyphotographer Wehn testing this myself and uploading the jpg image you have shared, I get a new webp image created that is smaller in file size at 356 KB. Could I check with you what settings you have set when going to Settings > Media > Modern Image Formats?

@orlandosydneyphotographer That’s interesting. I had the same settings set as you so perhaps there is some form of conflict causing this. Let’s try to rule that out. To check this, please follow the steps below:

1. Login to your live site from?a?Chrome browser incognito window.
2. Install and activate the?Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
3. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
4. From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Modern Image Formats“.
5. Perform another image upload and check the file sizes once more

Let me know the outcome of this test. If you have any questions about the instructions or anything above then let me know.

I followed your last instructions with Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot then uploaded a fresh file.

The converted file now reads;

File type: WEBP

File size: 317 KB

Dimensions: 1920 by 1280 pixels

Which is the expected file size as the original upload size was 883kb in jpg.

So what happened before, and how we keep the correct upload and conversion behaviour?

@orlandosydneyphotographer Thanks for the response and glad to hear that this worked. The fact that it did work this time while in troubleshooting mode points to there being a conflict with one of your other plugins. To find the cause of the conflict you can enable other plugins one by one while in troubleshooting mode and checking the upload process once more.

When you encounter the same issue as before where the generated webp image isn’t the right size, you will know which plugin is conflicting and causing this to happen.

Hi Adam,

I spent most of the day fiddling around doing just that.

The plugins, no conflict. When I switched on the theme, it happened again. The theme gotta be used.

I tried the switch on “Output fallback images – Also generate fallback images in the original upload format” and it doesn’t do it. The only saved image is in jpg, same size.

But on the front end there’s no webp, just jpgs. Kinda pointless again.
