Uploaded media is broken and not showing up

Hello,

I recently started managing a wordpress website and my first issue is that the media I upload and that others have uploaded in the past is broken and not showing up. The only way we can get media (pictures, videos, pdfs, docs) to show up is to host them somewhere else and link to them. The media appears broken in the media library, and then on the website when I try to go to a picture’s page I get a 404.

I had recently updated to 3.9.2 but I can’t remember if the issue was there before. I just noticed it when I started uploading media myself.

I have tried turning off all plugins, changing the folder permissions to 744 and 755, and the media files to 644. Nothing has worked for me yet.
