It’s my understanding that other file types are converted to WebP by wordpress, why not png?

Is there a switch or a hook that I can make it convert all uploaded images into webp format?

WebP conversion is plugin territory. Are you using a webp plugin? If so, I recommend asking at the plugin’s support area here, so the plugin’s developers and support community can help you with this.

    Are you sure?

I have no WebP related plugins active but I can clearly see that when I upload JPEG images all the intermediate sizes generated immediately after uploading are all webp format.

Not so for PNG images though.

I think this feature was added a couple years ago.

Nope. WP core does not do that. I just uploaded a jpg file to a “clean” install of WP:

    No webp images are created.

If you see webp image files, they’re from a plugin or your theme.
