Was using free version of Enigma Theme, but decided to upgrade to the Premium Enigma version. (Website is only a test at the moment).
Clicked on the ‘Upgrade To Premium’, and paid for it. I actually thought it would update automatically but it didn’t of course. So I downloaded the zip file to my desktop.

I went to Themes, and ‘Upload a New Theme’. All seemed quite straight forward and simple, however when I selected ‘upload’ I got a message saying:

‘The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini.’

… I should have guessed that it would not go to plan! ??

This is all new to me as I have always just worked in Dreamweaver.

Now I am stuck …. I paid for the upgrade to use with the site I am testing out and I can’t even upload it now because WP says it’s too big?!

Can anyone help please? To be honest, nothing seems very easy to find here on WordPress. I find it quite overwhelming all the stuff there is to read.

Appreciate if someone can help me with the upload of my upgraded theme.

    Thanks
    Sheila

  • You can upload it manually using your ftp client or the file manager in your hosts control panel. Some reference material: Adding New Themes

[edit] Some additional reference points for the max upload size issue:

The most efficient way of increasing the maximum allowed upload size is usually to consult the user FAQ’s and documentation provided by your hosting service for their preferred method of raising the upload limit for your environment (if they allow it).

There’s also a plugin that might do it for you: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/increase-upload-max-filesize/

And a general search and information for similar discussions on the issue: https://www.ads-software.com/search/increase+upload+size

Take a look here about uploading through File Manager in cPanel:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=cpanel+upload

If you try that and still have the same problem, go to wp-content/themes/ and rename your current theme’s (and not your “themes”) folder by doing something as simple as just adding an underscore character like this_. After that, make a new folder there with the exact name of the new theme you wish to upload, then upload its contents just a few folders or files at a time.

edit: Oops, please excuse me there, Clayton! I tend to type slowly and did not know you had just posted.

Hello and thanks everyone for getting back to me.

First of all, I tried the plugin, but it has made no difference.

Secondly, I’m afraid I have to say that I am a little confused here. You speak about a CPanel. I am hosted with Just Host, where I have a CPanel, but I don’t seem to have anything like that here on WordPress.

I downloaded WordPress to have it on my Desktop and at the moment selected to work on a test site. Don’t know if that what the problem is.

Really sorry, but like I said … a bit confused about this … no control panel for me here on WP. I only have a Dashboard … that’s all I can see.

If you can kindly guide me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it. I’m obviously on the wrong road somewhere.

    Thanks

eg … I also don;t know where to find wp-content/themes/ … it’s not on my dashboard.

    Where have I gone wrong?
    Thanks
    Sheila

I downloaded WordPress to have it on my Desktop and at the moment selected to work on a test site.

Where is your test site located? If you are running it on a “localhost” development installation, which one is it, and what OS is it installed on?

    Hi there,
    It is located at https://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/

    Thanks
    Sheila

It’s probably going to be as simple as copy and paste. All you really need to know is where your web-server root directory is located. That can vary with whatever server package you chose, ie: WAMP, MAMP, EasyPHP, or a Bitnami Appliance, etc…but it will always be wherever you actually installed your WordPress directory. Consult the documentation for whatever server package you installed for the default /htdocs location.

Locate your web-root directory, and your theme folder will be at /wordpress/wp-content/themes/

Extract/unzip the theme on your desktop and then copy and paste the un-compressed theme directory to /wordpress/themes.

    Thanks very much Clayton-James.

I will take a look at that tomorrow. Sounds promising ??

I’m in UK and it’s 3am … o off to bed just now.

    Thanks again.

Will let you know if I succeed.

    Regards
