Hi, I am tackling the loading time of our site and note that I can improve it if I convert the JPG/PNG images on our site to JXR files. When I tried to upload a JXR image file, it was not allowed. So I downloaded the WP Extra File Types plugin. Of the list of options JXR was not there, so I need to complete the mandatory boxes at the bottom of the list but I’m not sure what I should type here. The fields are:

Description: (I added ‘JXR next gen’ but don’t know if this is correct)

    File Extension: (I added ‘.JXR’)

    MIME Type: (I added ‘image/jxr’)

When I clicked ‘Save’, where I had typed ‘.jxr’ became highlighted in yellow and ‘where I had typed ‘jxr’ in the MIME Type field became highlighted in orange. And this new format wasn’t added to the existing list which means that I still can’t use it!

Does anyone know how I can upload JXR images without touching any code. I thought this plugin would do the trick. Many thanks in advance.

Have you thought about end-user browser support? That is… if your site’s visitors can actually see the JXR images on your site without having to install special software or browser extensions.

    See: https://caniuse.com/jpegxr

In any case, JXR is actually an old format that, even in its day, was only supported by Internet Explorer. From the CANIUSE link above, it seems no browser supports it natively today.

Perhaps it makes your site “faster” because the images are not loaded at all?

Thanks for your reply. That’s really insightful.

Looking at your link it appears that not many browsers support JXR images at all. Is there another format that you would recommend to help with speeding up loading time?

Thanks again. I believe that I have resolved this now.

I see you’ve resolved this, so you’ve likely discovered the following on your own. For the sake of anyone landing here via search, it’s currently recommended that images be served in modern “next-gen” formats like WebP or AVIF.
