I have to reinstall/upgrade my WordPress blog to v. 2.6.3. I know how to do it, and I’m following the “detailed instructions” carefully, but the last time I did this I ran into a peculiar problem: the ftp program that I use (“Netfinder”) has various options that one can choose when uploading; they are:

    – “Use Internet Config’s File Mappings. (“Intelligent.”)
    – Always as MacBinary.
    – Always as BinHex 4.0.
    – Always as Binary.
    – Always as Text.

The last time I did this, I originally left the setting to “Intelligent,” but it wasn’t very intelligent at all — it added suffixes to some of the files, and as I remember there was some problem distinguishing what was an image file and what was not, etc.

I easily solved the problem by selecting one of the other options when uploading all the files that end in “.php”. However, I no longer remember which option I chose!

So, my question is: When uploading WordPress files via ftp to my server, is it best to select “Always as Text” (except image files, when I should select something else? If so, what else?)?

(And please don’t tell me to simply get another ftp program — I like this one, and it works great, except for this rare glitch uploading php files.)

    Thanks.

Fair enough, but FileZilla usually gets this sort of thing right. Just saying.

Check your FTP programs settings, and see if it has anywhere in it that you can associate mime types or extensions with specific methods of uploading. That’s what “Intelligent” usually means.

Also, something like 80% of the time, I just upload everything as binary and it works fine… on every platform except Windows. So if you’re using a Mac or Linux, then it’ll likely be okay all binary. Maybe. Don’t quote me on that.

Thanks. Question marked as “resolved.” I like to be careful and make sure every file is uploaded with the correct file mapping, so I don’t have to go back and/or worry that some little thing is wrong in this regard. “80% of the time” just makes me nervous. Also, I couldn’t find a way to associate mime types with uploading mappings. It’s OK – – this only happens once every blue moon. I’m using a Mac, btw, and still get the problem — probably because “NetFinder” is from 1996.

    Anyway, question is ANSWERED.
