Uploads directory / Consolidate Images

  • Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but it is almost impossible to figure out how to post a question anymore…

    Anyhow, I have noticed that I have images in a few different folders. Some are in a “gallery” directory that was created a while back when I used NextGen Gallery, some were created when I was using a theme that created a different uploads/images area.

    Anyhow, I’m wondering if I can just move all of these to the uploads folder and be done with it or if there is something else I can do? I would prefer not to use an image plugin because I want to keep my site light.

    If I move these images, they won’t be in any month/year folders. So wondering if that will also cause problems. Your thoughts on this are appreciated.

  • It certainly could cause problems. You likely have posts/pages that are looking for those images in those exact locations. If you move the files, they’ll become broken images anywhere on your site that was using them.

    It sounds like the NextGen folder can probably go away, since it sounds like you’re no longer using that plugin.

    Also, the month/year folders are a good thing as it naturally limits the number of images per folder and can help a bit with speed if you have a ton of images in there.

    Thanks, @mickmel. The other problem I’m having with the gallery is that those photos that are not inside a month/year folder do NOT show up in the library even though I can see using FTP that there are many more photos inside the uploads directory. How can I make them visible within the Media Library dashboard?
