Upsell or cross-sell product as a generic link

Hi,
Every product has a mutual associated product. I want to place, above the title of the product on the product page, two buttons for the two associated products, so that when the client in on a product page to be able to click on the button to see the associated product.
I think I need for this a generic link for cross sell products (or upsell products if not possible for cross sell) to use it for the buttons.
So, is there a link for cross sell products that I can use for the buttons?
Alternatively, it would be ok to use a custom image (a button) to replace the thumbnails of upsell products, but I do not know how to replace it.
