• Please help!

My business partner forgot to pay our domain renewal fee! As a result our WordPress blog has been taken down.

The expiry to pay was on the 13th September. The blog was still up till Saturday now it’s all gone.

She is dealing with our domain provider which is Crazy Domains to settle the account but what I want to know is once our domain payment has been settled and re linked to WordPress blog will we still have access to our last 3 years worth of work???

    So very disappointed and stressed.

When it comes to IT we are both novices re mappings etc.

Our blog was at https://www.finskis.com/ however now when you log in it states that the server can not be found and we cant log on the the admin page either.

Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Bella

  • Your WordPress information should still be in place.

You may need to update the DNS to point your domain name to your web hosting.

Lorenzo is correct, but I’ll clarify a bit.

A domain name is used to identify an IP address (sometimes more than one). so finskis.com is used to point a browser to the correct IP address (which is a string of numbers). The domain name has nothing to do with your actual content, but is way for browsers to find the site.

So, as long as your hosting is in place (where the files and database are actually located), everything should still be there. And there’s a good chance if you knew the IP address, you could still get to your website.

The bad thing about letting a domain expire is sometimes they get purchased by someone else very quickly.

So, you pay for a domain name, which is sort of like getting listed in the phone book.

You pay for a web host, which is where your website “lives” (I guess keeping with the analogy, it’s the actual phone inside your house).

And then you need to “connect” the two (as Lorenzo mentioned, it’s the DNS. It’s what associates a web address with and IP address).

You also want to make for certain that your site/data is being backed up. Your host may do it for you, or it can be done by anyone with access to your server (you may want to look for a WordPress person).

    Hi again,

Still lost! We have paid for our web hosting again but still no idea how to get our blog back up and access to our admin etc?

Any chance you could help if we gave you our log in?

Unless you host nuked your account from its servers, it should all still be there at mysite.com just as always. Give them a call and see what they say.

Did your partner forget to pay the domain name fee or hosting fee? In either case, you should probably contact your host, especially if it was the later.

she didnt pay the web hosting fee! I am so annoyed at her!

it was due on the 13th of August, we had auto renewal on the account but because her credit card expired in August the auto renewal didnt work and hence the issue of the web hosting being disconnected.

they cut us off on the 13th September – I have been on annual leave and only just found out!

i have just gone to crazy domains and paid the web hosting for finskis but they have told me that there is nothing they can do to get our content and blog back.

    thanks anyway.

Wow, normally I would expect a host to give you a little grace period or maintain a backup for a limited time. I’d find a new host. And you definitely need to learn how to do your own backups (or hire someone) regardless.

You might be able to find some of it using Google cache, but depending on what your content was, that may not be much help.

You may be able to recover your content via Google’s WayBack machine –

    https://archive.org/

    https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.finskis.com/

(Sorry, I couldn’t seem to make a proper link with the archive.org uri structure)

Yeah, but still probably better than nothing. Sorry for the mis-info about who runs what… I think there’s also a way to access google caches with Chrome?

    thanks guys!

still annoyed with my business partner though and the web host service!

Yes, I think we’re all sympathetic to that side of it :). That kind of thing always sucks no matter how it happened.

I’m not sure on the Chrome extension thing. But between Wayback Machine and Google cache (search for your site), you might be able to get some of it back. Best of luck.
