• Hello,

I have the free Elara theme on my site https://ambitiouslyalexa.com. In the middle of updating a blog post and changing a font through the Google fonts plug-in, my site completely crashed and returned a 503 error.

My host says the server is not the issue. They updated all my plugins and WordPress for me after this issue happened, and they said there is nothing more they can do on their end, that it is an incompatibility with this Elara theme.

Please let me know what can be done. Keep in mind, I have no access to my usual WordPress wp-admin backend. I only have access to the cPanel file manager as the site is down.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @ambitiouslyalexa,

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble, thanks for reaching out about it. Fortunately the cached version is still showing up for those of us who aren’t logged in, so it at least looks good to the rest of the world. ??

Would you mind including the actual error from the error logs, and the specific incompatibility that your host found? And who is your host? If there is an actual incompatibility we’d love to get to the bottom of it before anyone else encounters it (which fortunately doesn’t appear to be happening yet).

Thanks again, looking forward to getting this resolved!

Oh really it’s up and viewable?! That’s so interesting! Even in incognito mode, it is down for me. But I’m happy to hear that at the very least. Thanks for your prompt response!

Here is the error log my host sent me. The host is NameHero:

    log:

[03-Apr-2023 11:52:58 UTC] PHP Warning:  Use of undefined constant WPLANG – assumed ‘WPLANG’ (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home9/ambitiou/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-resized-image-quality/wp-resized-image-quality.php on line 88

[04-Apr-2023 01:30:58 UTC] PHP Fatal error:  require(): Failed opening required ‘/home9/ambitiou/public_html/wp-content/themes//inc/back-compatibility.php’ (include_path=’/home9/ambitiou/public_html/wp-content/plugins/kirki/:/home9/ambitiou/public_html/wp-content/plugins/kirki/core:.:/opt/alt/php74/usr/share/pear’) in /home9/ambitiou/public_html/wp-content/themes/elara/functions.php on line 13

Thanks so much, that’s super helpful!

Yup- the (cached) site is still loading fine from here! ??

The error shows that something is preventing the standard get_template_directory() function from returning the correct theme directory- it’s trying to load a file that doesn’t exist.

I would say just comment out line 13 (since it’s not really necessary anyway), but this is a standard function that is used in numerous places, and really needs to be working on your site moving forward (no matter what theme you use). The odd thing is that it must have been working prior to this time, or the site never would have functioned at all.

Hopefully this clue is helpful and allows NameHero to pinpoint what changed to cause this standard WordPress function to return an empty theme directory, but feel free to pass along our support email ([email protected]) to them and we would love to work together to track it down if they’d like.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Steven,

I am not exactly sure where or how i would go about editing the line you’re referring to, but I just sent the support email some login credentials to investigate this further!

Because I think the exact same thing, that having a sudden incompatibility with the theme, as my host claims, does not make sense if the theme was functioning just fine for so long.

I know I use several plugins on top of the theme to customize things like my homepage beyond the theme’s default, and I wonder if that might be a recipe for disaster waiting to happen!

Thanks so much- glad to see that they were able to get things back up and running!
