URGENT: Sites automatically updating to Alpha version 5.5.3-alpha-49449

Same here. Site after production site auto upgrading to alpha release of 5.5.3. No beta tester plugin

You are using a development version of WordPress, it can be updated to the latest nightly build automatically:
No upgrade to 5.5.2 ru

Confirmed on all our sites: re-installing 5.5.2 works. Fantastically fast response, thanks for the superb resolution.

The only option I had was to downgrade to version 5.5.2 US. Yes but my site is in French …

So I restored a backup, luckily the only one of my sites that was affected is in development. : D

The solution only works for US sites

In my case it has been two german sites: first you install the 5.5.2.en-us version and after that, the wordpress Update section offers you to re-install the localized 5.5.2 version.

In my case that worked.

Dont forget to clean up the twenty-x-themes and probably remove the Akismet-Plugin.

This happened on 3 of about 20 of my live production sites so far. The reinstall button worked. But ugh, how did that happen?

This happened to 2 of my websites too.
I was able to rollback to 5.2.2

This bug also installed the Akismet plugin and all default themes from TwentyTen to TwentyTwenty, so make sure you check this and uninstall any unused plugin or theme!

Same problem, one Dutch site that updated to 5.5.3 alpha and installed all WordPress themes and Akismet. Very annoying!

my 2 cents: may be that this happen only on english versions? On “it” versions we have no alpha upgrade

If I look at the dozens of sites we do maintenance for it is mixed: A fair number were upgraded to that alpha version while the majority were not.

Most of these sites were not on English language versions.

I think they managed to stop the rollout as it was happening and depending on how WP updates are rolled out probably certain geographic locations were affected more than others before they could shut it down.

The rollback on the affected sites was not problematic in any case. Just a matter of hitting the reinstall button and waiting a bit.

I’ve entered your link, substituting my web site address and there is no button to reinstall on that page. Reinstalling WP from the update page just reinstalls 5.5.3. Please advise.

5.5.3 is now the current version. 5.5.2 was updated right after the 5.5.3-alpha fiasco.
