URI Crumb crashed my WP blog

    My WordPress blog is at https://lamar63.net/wordpress/

    I downloaded and activated URI Crumb after reading on Matt’s list (https://codex.www.ads-software.com/User:Matt/2.0_Plugin_Compatibility#T_-_V) that URI Crumb works with WordPress 2.0. It is by Kimmo Suominen who translated WordPress into Finnish and has authored 8 plugins https://codex.www.ads-software.com/User:Kim
    Sounds as if he knows what he is doing and dependable.

    I immediately got an error when I went to edit pages to add the “Call the get_breadcrumb() function from your (my) theme template where you (I) want the breadcrumb to be inserted.” I was a little concerned as the syntax did not look just right. I could not even get to the editor. I only got the error.

    The error and only thing I can get at my URL or from the WordPress administrator now is
    “Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /homepages/40/xxxxxxxxxx/htdocs/wordpress/wp-includes/functions.php on line 1689”

    I do not know what all those numbers mean. I hope they do not compromise my security. Just in case, I have put xxxxxxxxxx in place of the number. If you need to know the number, there should be some way for me to give it to you without it being posted a long time on this message board.

    Now nothing works. I immediately hit the back key on my Foxfire browser and deactivated URI Crumb. I did get a deacrivated message in the cell, but no other changes. There is still the error as soon as I leave this plugin page.

    I do not know if there is an easy fix or if I should just dump the whole installation and start over. I did try copying a fresh, clean version of function.php in the wp-includes folder. No change.

    What do you recommend?

    By the way, Matt recommends URI Crumb version 0.3. I did a search on URI Crumb in the various databases of plugins from WordPress and its not there. The only place to find URI Crumb is the same link Matt gives in his list: https://kimmo.suominen.com/sw/uricrumb/

    In looking at what is IN the file, now that I have used it, the version number is first listed as v 1.3 2005/04/25 06:38:24. But after that first set of information is the following:

    So I was using version 0.3 as recommended (or was it really 1.3 as listed at the top?).

    By the way, on Kimmo’s home page, he has the following message:
    “I just completed testing my plugins with WordPress 2.1-alpha3 and they all work correctly. This should mean that it is safe to continue using them with WordPress 2.1, once it is released.”

    His message makes me wonder if he knows that some of his plugins do not work in WordPress 2.0.

    I really need some help soon, or I’ll have to start over. I also feel that I should warn others and that Matt might consider removing URI Crumb from his list of working plugins for WordPress 2.0.

    Probably. Well, you may hear from him tomorrow then. As for breadcrumb navs, I’ve got this one on a client site and it works perfectly with 2.0+:

    Thanks, vakaryl. I am in the process of rebuilding the blog at a different location. I am only checking here in hope of getting a message about a fix before I finish rebuilding.

    No one has a clue as to what the error message I am getting means?

    I have rebuilt my site in another place. Now what do I do about my API key? I don’t remember the one I had. I don’t really need another one.

    I was waiting to delete the previous site to see if I could learn what happened. I won’t keep two sites running.

    This day has been a nightmare!!!

    URI Crumb does not modify any of the core WordPress files. It is fully contained in a single file that is placed in the “wp-content/plugins” directory.

    I’m using URI Crumb on https://biitsi.com/ and it is displayed in a bar above the blog header picture. That blog was running 2.0.5, and I just now upgraded it to 2.0.6-RC2, and URI Crumb worked fine with both.

    I also have URI Crumb enabled on my test site for the forthcoming 2.1 release at https://kimmo.suominen.com/wptrunk/ and it works there, too, although the default theme doesn’t have a URI Crumb display anywhere.

    I don’t have WordPress 2.0 installed anywhere to test, but when I was using WordPress 2.0, URI Crumb was working with it. URI Crumb hasn’t changed in a very long time, and it is very simple, so I’d be surprised if it doesn’t work with 2.0.

    In any case, if you are getting errors even after deactivating the plugin, then something else is the cause of the errors.

    P.S. I’d strongly advice upgrading to at least 2.0.5 as 2.0 is very old.

    I do not know how to tell what version of WordPress I have — and I have been looking to find that information, but I believe it is the latest, so it should be 2.0.5.

    I worked until the wee hours of the morning building a new site. Now that I have slept and am awake, I just noticed a message at the bottom of the plugins page of the new installation:
    “If something goes wrong with a plugin and you can’t use WordPress, delete or rename that file in the wp-content/plugins directory and it will be automatically deactivated.”

    So I just deleted the plugin from the plugins folder and instantly, the error was gone. My files are now accessible and I can use the Admin screens once again. No more error. I only wish someone had told me that last night before I rebuilt most of the blog.

    I read in the support messages of one person who keeps a copy of WordPress on the side for use to test plugins before he uses them on his actual site. This is not a bad idea as one knows not only that the plugin works, but also that any problem is with the interaction of plugins, not the plugin itself. I will try this approach.

    I will leave the issue unresolved just until I can do some more checking on the URI Crumb plugin and hopefully find the conflict (probably between URI Crumb and another plugin) and post it here as the resolution. If I cannot do that checking today, I will be able to do it on Saturday. It would be better for the community as well as me to know the problem.

    I have confirmed that I am using WordPress 2.0.5.

    I think the problem I was having was caused by my having activated Breadcrumb Nav XP (mentioned above by vkaryl) first. It did work, but I was having trouble putting the code in the proper place in the templates. My frustration level was stressed. So I decided to try URI Crumb. I deactivated Breadcrumb Nav XP, forgetting to change the template (I only had changed single.php). Then I activated URI Crumb <i>before</i> modifying the template.

    So I just deleted the plugin from the plugins folder and instantly, the error was gone. My files are now accessible and I can use the Admin screens once again. No more error. I only wish someone had told me that last night before I rebuilt most of the blog.

    That is one key troubleshooting trick with plugins. You can find that advice under the plugin list:

    If something goes wrong with a plugin and you can’t use WordPress, delete or rename that file in the wp-content/plugins directory and it will be automatically deactivated.

    Yes, michaelper22! Ain’t hindsight great!

    I learned to read the very bottom of WordPress in the Admin console. I learned that deactivation is not enough; deletion is cleaner. I learned that when backing out of a plugin, one must remove changes made to prior templates before activating another plugin.
