Check out MailChimp – specifically the area called “Unaccepted Query Strings” at this link – https://kb.mailchimp.com/campaigns/design/troubleshoot-broken-links.

Thank you — I checked that out, but unfortunately it didn’t help. It seems to apply only if Google Analytics is being used. (We don’t use it.)

What are you using to create the “utm” in your URL string?

    Thread Starter Andrew

    (@andrewkantor)

Ha! I’m not! The URL I give MailChimp is clean — no utm at all. For example, https://www.sofi.com/gpha. MailChimp adds the Analytics code (the utm etc.).

I figured that my site — or the sofi.com site — should just ignore that, rather than deliver a 404 error.

    (Does that make sense?)

I just verified. MailChimp is just pulling my RSS feed to make the mail. I looked at the feed, and the links there are ‘plain’ — no utm_ code in it at all.

No it wouldn’t ignore them. Right above the Unaccepted Query Strings on that same MailChimp document it says:

Our system makes sure your links are formatted correctly if you use MailChimp’s link building tools. However, if you create a custom-coded template, you or your designer are responsible for verifying that your link formatting is correct.

When you add these link tracking methods to your campaigns, always test your campaign and use the Link Checker tool to ensure your links work as expected.

Did you test things out first? Did you create a custom template?

You are correct that I used a custom template, but I used the link checker. In the checker, it shows my ‘clean’ links and they work fine.

But for some reason, MailChimp is adding those trackers even though I don’t have Google Analytics… which now tells me it’s a MailChimp issue, not a WordPress issue.

Yeah, that’s where I was going with this. They can probably sort this out for you.

Thank you very much for your help! The MailChimp folks are looking into it now. Eventually I’ll get this sorted out!

That’s great Andrew. Maybe post how they resolved it here in case someone else has the same issue. Have a great weekend ??

Have you found a solution for the problem? Having the same here!
