Use a Custom Page Template for a "Printable" Post Button?

I want to add a button to my single post pages along the lines of “Printable Format” and have this button open a new window with the post formatted to print.

I’m thinking I can make a custom page template, called “print.php” and steal some of the code from “single.php” to use there. What would the link look like on my button to open the currently opened post in a new window from the print.php template?

Does that make sense? I think this is the way to do it, I’ve tried the css option for printability, but I think a custom template would be better suited for my needs.
