Use “code” and “pre” tag to format codes?

<code> is typically for inline code reference and <pre> is for a block of code. Make sure to convert any “<” or “>” to “&lt;” and “&rt;”

There are a number of plugins you can use to add language-specific syntax highlighting that go beyond the code and pre tags.

I try to prevent install plugins since I have installed several already. Now I follow the instructions in https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Writing_Code_in_Your_Posts#List_of_Related_Character_Entities and set the CSS style for pre tag, then use pre tag for a block of code snippet.

Now when I copy code snippet from another editor, such as UltraEdit or NotePad, into WordPress edit window, I will notice the following two problems:

1. Sometimes the leading spaces of each code line will be removed. Why?

2. The leading tab for each line will be converted to 4 spaces. Just wonder if I can control the number of spaces a tab will be converted into?
